Coffee and Cake

My favorite memory of my Uncle Joe is seeing him at the table with a cup of coffee. He would walk from Grandma's house on 219th street to ours on 224th street. He always had to duck under the doorway to come in and in his loud voice would say to my Mom, "Hey Paquita!  I come for coffee and cake".  Now Mom never had cake or cookies for us, but somehow she always had some hidden away for Uncle Joe.

When we got home from school, Uncle Joe would be sitting with Mom and somehow even though Mom did not speak alot of english, she and Uncle Joe communicated well and understood each other. He was always helpful by fixing little things in our house or would pick up something on sale and bring it to my Mom. He always treated my mother as his sister. Us kids? Ha! We knew that we had to walk a straight line.  Every time he saw us, he asked us if we were behaving and being good. Even when we were up to no good and tom-foolery, we would assure him that we were.

As I am writing this a smile is crossing my face. I guess if I was to describe Uncle Joe, it would be with two words..... Gentle Giant.  "I am being good Uncle Joe, promise! Keep looking over your family as you always have.  Rest in peace and love, and know that you will be missed and loved. Save me some coffee and cake!"
