Sharon Charlese Elizabeth Ancruem

Sharon Charlese Elizabeth Ancruem
September 30, 1950 - December 9, 2017

Sharon Charlese Elizabeth Ancruem (née Dodd) was third-born to parents Lillian and Mortimer Dodd in Westmoreland, Jamaica on September 30, 1950. She was the middle child following older sisters Hyacinth Simatha (deceased 2012), and Jennifer Patricia Carmalitha. Sharon was older sister to Charmaine Mortimer Alexis, and Orville Charles Anthony. In the early 1960s, Sharon and her family emigrated from their home in Jamaica to seek new opportunities in London, England.
Teenaged Sharon completed her primary education and enjoyed clubbing and partying in London with her sisters before marrying in 1970. On September 17, 1972, she gave birth to a son, Leon (Herman) Redman and decided to continue her education in order to pursue a career in nursing. Her first marriage ended in divorce, however, Sharon continued and completed her nursing education and training as a midwife.
In 1981, Sharon’s ambitions and desire to travel led her to participate in a Nurses Exchange Program. Leaving Leon (Herman) with her sister, Charmaine, Sharon would travel to New York for a year to further expand her horizons at Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx. During her year in New York, she met David Julius Ancruem, an X-ray Technician and single father to Damien Maurice Ancruem (born 1976) and Nicole Linda Compton (born 1976).
After a long pursuit and courtship, Sharon and David were married on December 15, 1984. They spent their honeymoon in London where Sharon introduced David to her extended family. Upon returning to the United States, Sharon immediately applied for U.S. Residency.
David and Sharon inherited their first home at 1028 Ward Avenue in the Bronx. In 1985 they purchased 1031 Ward Avenue where son, Leon (Herman), and Sharon’s beloved nephew, Elliot “Ging Ging”, joined them (deceased 2013). In 1987, David became interested in ‘house flipping’ and purchased 139 Palisade Avenue in Yonkers and began renovations.
The following year on September 15, 1988, after a long labor & delivery, their first child, Oliver James Ancruem was born. Olivia Jeannette Ancruem followed a year later and was born on November 1, 1989. After a stray bullet came through the nursery window in 1990, the family decided to move to the newly renovated house in Yonkers.
Sharon transitioned well to the suburban lifestyle in Westchester. She was always a fan of the arts and regularly attended plays and shows. She continued commuting to work nights at Jacobi Hospital. She maintained a full-time work schedule, continued working on the house, was an extremely active member of the PTA, and was committed to providing a well-rounded education for the children (not just the youngest, but for all the children, including her nieces, nephews and step-children). She regularly participated in and enrolled her children in extracurricular activities throughout summers while fostering her nieces and nephews.
In 2002, Sharon agreed to aide in the care of her mother-in-law, Jeannette Ancruem, who was stricken with Alzheimer’s disease and lived with the family until her passing in 2013.
Sharon would continue her work and be recognized at Jacobi Medical Center for 27 years of ‘untiring dedicated service (above and beyond the call of duty) to the Department of Nursing Education and Medical ICU/CCU’. She would also be recognized for her work with HIV/AIDS patients.
In 2009, after Sharon began showing symptoms of confusion and disorientation at home and at work, she was diagnosed with early-onset atypical dementia with possible Alzheimer’s Disease. She immediately retired from her teaching work at Jacobi and was primarily cared for by her husband David, and children, Oliver and Olivia, and stepdaughter Nicole Linda Compton. She resided in her home at 139 Palisade Avenue until her peaceful departure at St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers on December 9, 2017.
